AWAI | Resonance

The night his voice reached me.

Different threads cross. This is one that crossed mine.

Shuvam Gurung (Dusty) singing on stage

SHUVAM GURUNG | DUSTY singer · guitarist

He was not singing.
He was returning.

Kathmandu, one night,
on my way to Everest.
I knew almost nothing about him.
All I knew was what I heard.

And for a moment,
everything in me went still.

He was singing,
but it was not a performance.
Through his voice, everything
the world had put on him
seemed to fall away:
roles, expectations,
the need to be someone.

He was returning
to somewhere before all of that.
To himself.

His voice was raw, unguarded, transparent.
Nothing in it was there to hide
the human being inside.

Breath. Overtones.
A body resonating in space.
Like the resonance of a Japanese taiko drum,
the vibration reached my belly,
every single cell in my body,
before it ever reached my ears.

For a moment, I was touching
a human soul,
naked as the day it was born.

I did not know him.
But something in me recognized something in his voice.

Some things reach us before we understand them.

we meet like strangers
you bring happiness
like first drop of rain does.— from Dusty’s words

AWAI | When one life reaches another

Much later, I began to understand what had reached me that night.

We come from different countries,
languages, cultures, ages, and lives.
There is much we may never fully understand
about each other.

And still, something rare happened:
neither of us had to reshape ourselves
before we could meet.

I did not have to be useful, clear, correct,
or easy to understand.

He did not have to become
the person I would have designed.

He remains himself.
I remain myself.
And still, one life can reach another.

HIS THREAD

That night in Kathmandu was a year and a half ago.
I have listened to him every day since.
It has never worn thin. It only goes deeper,
into my belly, into my bones.

On days I could barely hold on,
that vibration kept me here.

I have loved live music all my life
and been to countless shows.
And yet, his vibration reaches a place in me
nothing else ever has.

That is one listener’s body speaking, nothing more.

Still, I am certain there are people
waiting for this voice, some without knowing it yet.
That is why he is in these pages.

MY THREAD

Over time, I found I did not have to be
anyone in particular to be reached.
Not a mother. Not a veterinarian.
Not someone useful. Not someone getting it right.
Just alive.

He did not try to save me.
Still, his voice reminded me
of something I had almost forgotten:
being alive can be enough
to reach another human being.

That was what being saved meant to me.

Something in me recognized something in his voice.
Maybe something in you will, too.
