AWAI

The space between,
where things kept apart
begin to relate.

The beginning

A girl who could never believe one life weighed more than another

From childhood, she could only see human life and all other life as having the same weight.

A cat. A horse. A child.
A worm drying on the road.

But she grew up in a human world governed by a logic different from life itself, where lives are ranked, priced, kept, and let go.

She did not stand outside it. She lived inside it, and carried its contradictions in her own body:
Loving, yet controlling.
Saving life, yet taking life.

AWAI is not grey

We can meet as we are.

GREY — Black and white blend into one new color.

AWAI — Black and white meet. A pattern forms between them.

Grey blends. AWAI relates.

AWAI, lived

For a long time, we were taught to keep these apart.
She has lived with one foot on either side.

CREATURE | FOOD

As a teenager, at a slaughterhouse, she saw it plainly: food had been a living creature. “I have been killing, too.”

LOVE | CONTROL

She held her old horse’s head as he was put down, whispering, “It’s okay.” He trusted humans to the end. It felt like betraying him.

HUMAN | ANIMAL
Training with a dolphin

Today, as a dolphin vet and trainer, she trains through a dialogue of equals: the dolphin’s voice weighs as much as hers.

FEAR | LOVE
Smiling with a house centipede

A house centipede, a creature many people flinch from, is her friend. His name is Geji.

KIMONO | 5,500 m
In kimono, facing Everest

She climbed to 5,500 m in the Everest region, wearing kimono and jika-tabi. A year later, she carried a furoshiki from a friend fresh off Everest’s summit to the top of Kilimanjaro.

She stands in between,
and lets them meet as they are.

That girl is me.

My role

I stand in the AWAI.
I watch where things quietly meet.
I give it words. I give it shape.
So that we can notice.

A discovery

For years, I tried to turn this into business.
It never quite fit, and it hurt.
Then I realized:

It was never business.
It was art.

Foreshadowing

She had already drawn it.

Elementary school graduation artwork

In 2026, a childhood friend sent her a photo of an artwork still hanging in their elementary school. She had no memory of it. “You designed it,” the friend said. Humans, animals, sea and sky, in one picture. She had been living inside that picture all along.

The story

命は、誰のものか。

AYA インタビュー 全19章+エピローグ(日本語)

私がある人の声を世界に届けたいと思うまでに、何を見て、何を見過ごせなかったのか。その話を、幼い頃からたどってみます。

Read the rest of the story, in Japanese: nineteen chapters, from a dog taken away when she was three, to the place she is drawing now.

Shuvam Gurung (Dusty) singing on stage

He was not singing.
He was returning.

Now, taking shape

Interbeing Studio

Home for All

A real and online place where every life belongs: an integrated space for hospice, nursery, free school, and more. Now being built from the ground up.

SORA / KŪ

Sky, and Kū, the Buddhist sense of emptiness. A gift book (in progress) on feeling connected to everything, and on being moved by how different, and how beautiful, everything is.

Mom’s Friend

A picture book series (in progress). It began with something I did without thinking: introducing my children to everything we met in the world, bugs included, as “Mom’s friend.” It may not be your friend. But you wouldn’t be mean to your mom’s friend. No judging, no treating as an enemy, no exploiting. Just one being meeting another, connecting or not.

Circle of Limitless

Mountains beyond self-set limits: climbing, trekking, horse riding and skiing, together with people with disabilities.

Work with me

What dolphins taught me about teams without control.

What would your team look like if every voice carried the same weight?

Talks and workshops for teams and organizations: relationships without judgment, where people grow each other’s strengths and cover each other’s gaps.
